Piggy on the pass
We
Looking back over the last 6 months it occurred to me we’ve now been to Restaurant Atelier 8 times! That’s a record for us, we rarely dine at restaurants more than once or twice in a year! We’ve learnt how to master pork crackling from the master himself. We’ve dined under the stars in the courtyard. We’ve experienced the full degustation menu. And we’ve experienced many ‘on-a-spit’ meals – lamb, goat, and of course piggy.
Darren and Berni are the most welcoming, friendly, generous people you could ever meet. It’s really no wonder their diners keep coming back for more. So what better way than to spend the last Sunday of the year than with some great friends (some old, some new – thanks to the power of social media) at Atelier with a pig-on-a-spit and many many sides (all for $50pp!!)
Sunday lunches are such a great time to catch up with friends and while the afternoon away. Karen also held a lucky door prize competition where nearly everyone was a winner – I came home with a copy of David Herbert’s ‘Best-ever baking recipes’ while Dylan got Ben O’Donoghue’s ‘Outdoor’. I was completely stoked with my Christmas present and hope to become a baking queen yet. But, on to the food…
Sides are never just sides when you’re at Atelier, they’re gorgeous in their own right. The buffalo mozzarella was incredible, I could literally eat it by the bucket full. Darren’s green salad with roasted hazelnuts and hazelnut dressing is one of our favourites. And the couscous, ahhh I need to learn to make fluffy couscous like Darren’s.
As for the pig? Well, most people know I don’t rave on about pork like everyone else. I’m all about beef (#beefbash, anyone?) but the master of pork wins me over every time, though I did fail to take a photo of the pig actually ON the spit (oops). Darren cooks pork like no one else, he’s a pro and the meat is meltingly soft and SO flavoursome. Happy face!
It goes without saying, but THANK YOU to Darren and Berni for so many wonderful meals. And of course to Mel for bringing us all together in the first place. See you all in 2013!

I absolutely LOVE these “things” on a spit dinners and lunches that Atelier does…it feels like a bit family Sunday lunch…without the craziness of being with my family. The pork crackling was TO DIE for! So good…and the salads, oh my.

Pooooooooorrrrrrrkkkkk! Looks so good. We still haven’t been there. We’ll have to go sometime since we like porky things!
Hi Miss Piggy, I agree – they are fantastic long lunches! And thanks for being our finger model. Mmm crackling.
Hi Craig, you must book yourself in for the next ‘on-a-spit’. They are a load of fun and totally delicious. You’ll also have to check out the regular menu. Sooooo good!
