Coffee and cake

Living where we do, for Lex and I the luxury of having a good ‘local’ anything is something we don’t take for granted. We love having a local that is doing so many good things. The Baron, while not walking distance local, is the best we have found so far.

The Baron has been open for just over a year. By day it’s a funky coffee shop and by night (Fridays and Saturdays) it’s a small bar. We’re yet to check out their night time menu but we can tell you the breakfast menu is pretty spectacular.

We had both taken a week off work and were heading up to visit my mum on the Central Coast but needed a feed before we hit the road. As it was on our way to the freeway there was no chance we wouldn’t be dropping by.

Sausage Sambo – beef sausages w aioli, chilli jam, fried es shallots, mustard dressing on a panini ($11.50).

The name just jumped out at me, so nonchalant and a great Aussie slang word I had to have the Sausage Sambo. All the jams and relishes are made in house at The Baron which is always a nice touch. I had found on prior occasions their tomato relish to be a little too overpowering (a few too many coriander seeds) but their chilli jam is spot on. It complimented the sausage so well and I was in condiment heaven with lashings of aioli and mustard dressing. Mixed salad leaves allowed a little reprieve from the epic mix of sauces and the caramelised onions popped their sweet little heads in to make this the best sausage sambo I’ve ever had!

Scramby Eggs – free range eggs on sourdough toast ($9.00) + Bacon – double smoked bacon ($3.00).

Lex had the Scramby Eggs on our very first visit to The Baron but since then she has had a massive addiction to the Avocado on Toast, which after you have tried it you will understand why. With a hankering for eggs it was a no brainer, one order of Scramby Eggs and a side of their awesome double smoked bacon. While the serving size was pretty big you cannot complain when the eggs are this good. They are just so fresh and ever so creamy they even put Bill Granger’s to shame. We both love their bacon too, super thin, nicely smoked and cooked to crispy perfection.

Latte ($3.50).

As always the coffees delivered a much needed caffeine hit.

There is not a single time we’ve been to The Baron and not enjoyed everything. There was even once time I was more hungover than quite possibly possible, yet I ordered plain toast and it pulled me out of a pretty deep hole. It’s great to see what they are doing and even greater to see they have started a trend with more cafes of the same ethos opening in the area.

I LOVE The Baron – and we’re lucky to have a few great “local” places near us (there’s three in Castle Hill alone and now one in Baulko now). These guys aren’t doing dinners on Saturdays now – just Thursday & Fridays (you should go as it’s amazing).

Hi Miss Piggy – thanks for the update on the dinners. It’s ironic to get a good local and then not actually be able to get there during the week for dinner! haha that’s what happens when you work in the city. Oh well, maybe we can go for a late dinner one day (when I’m not eating dinner as early as a nanna!)

Yummy i love The Baron, they have the best Bacon & Egg roll (minus the egg in my case) but they have beautiful relish on it. it goes well with an organic ginger beer. I can’t wait to get back to The Baron soon Hint Hint :)
