Gelato Messina Fitzroy
If
Having walked past Gelato Messina on our way to Jimmy Grants I knew where we’d be heading for an afternoon treat. Yes Messina hails from our hometown of Sydney but you can never have too much Messina and I wasn’t going to miss out on an opportunity for a Messina fix.
‘Have a gay old time’ – swirls of caramel and milk gelato with bits of chocolate covered biscuit crumbs ($4.00 one scoop).
The Golden Gaytime has got to be one of the best ice creams ever invented. And I just had to see how Messina would interpret this classic. Caramel and milk gelato are swirled together then jam packed with chocolate covered biscuit crumbs. The nod to the classic was clear. The flavour combination just right. As always the gelato was smooth, soft and elastic. A great tribute… but the classic hasn’t been beaten this time around.

‘Fluffernutter’ – peanut butter gelato layered with brioche and marshmallow spread ($4.00 one scoop).
Dylan’s choice of Fluffernutter was a little reminder of our trip to New York last year and the discovery of a whole other world of sandwiches. An American childhood favourite, a fluffernutter is a peanut butter and marshmallow creme sandwich (who knew fairy bread was an Australian thing? and a fluffernutter sounds far less scary to an American?) Luscious peanut butter gelato smashed with brioche chunks and gooey marshmallow spread. A combination that worked quite well… and had me wondering if I should make a fluffernutter sandwich one of these days?

The Fitzroy store is currently the only Gelato Messina store in Victoria, though we don’t think that will stay the case for too long.
Messina hit sorted, off we went for another walk around town. Happy days.
